Confidence as an EMDR Therapist

Starting out with EMDR Therapy can be both exciting and challenging, particularly when working with complex clients. This sentiment was echoed by Andrew Leeds at the 2023 EMDR Association of Australia conference, where he highlighted a noticeable trend in therapist attrition post-training - a reflection of the struggles many therapists face in embedding EMDR Therapy into their clinical practice.

These reflections prompted me to contemplate my training role and my desire to contribute positively to the EMDR field. I am driven to understand the challenges EMDR therapists face, and to empower them not just in learning EMDR Therapy, but in integrating it into their existing therapeutic repertoire and own unique therapy style. It’s about bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired at EMDR training workshops and its practical application in day-to-day therapeutic work. I truly believe in the transformative power of EMDR Therapy, considering it too valuable for therapists not to fully incorporate into their work with clients.

Empowering EMDR Therapists

Towards the end of 2023, I held a free Q&A session to support EMDR therapists in overcoming apprehension and challenges, and to boost their confidence in applying EMDR Therapy. The session drew a substantial audience, shedding light on the necessity to bridge the gap between EMDR training and its practical implementation. One therapist beautifully summarised the session's impact by saying, "EMDR is a gift to be shared, not to be feared." I think that this statement encapsulates the transformative potential of EMDR Therapy - something that should be embraced rather than shied away from.

It is important for us to support each other as EMDR therapists as we walk alongside our brave clients as they navigate trauma and pursue transformative changes. My professional focus is to provide unwavering support to EMDR therapists, and to enhance their motivation, confidence, and excitement about their clinical work.
