Time Frame for Completion of EMDR Basic Training

The EMDR Association of Australia requires participants who commence an in-person Accredited Basic Training Program to complete the entire training within 2 years from their initial start date. This includes Part 1 training, Part 2 training, and 10 hours of consultation with an Accredited EMDR Consultant.

Participants will receive a certificate of participation in Part 1 training and Part 2 training at the completion of each of these workshops. However, participants will not receive a certificate of completion for the basic EMDR training program until they have completed the full EMDR Basic Training Program (Part 1, Part 2 and 10 hours of consultation).

Cancellation / Refund Policy

Places in training workshops are limited. Cancellations by registrants must be received in writing via email to contact@carolineburrows.com.au. A refund of the registration fee paid, less $100.00, will be issued for cancellations received more than 14 days before a workshop start date. No refunds will be issued after this date. Refunds cannot be made for workshop non-attendance, for any reason.

Registrants may transfer their registration to a future training workshop one time, provided the cancellation occurs more than 14 days of the start date of the training they are registered for. Substitutions are also welcome; however, the replacement person must meet the training eligibility requirements and full details of the substitute person must be provided to the training organisers at time of transfer. All pre-workshop materials must also be transferred to the substitute person so that they are well prepared for the training.

If COVID-19 restrictions prevent a training workshop from proceeding in-person as scheduled, Caroline Burrows reserves the right to move the workshop to an online format. No refunds will be permitted in these circumstances. However, existing registrants will be offered the choice to transfer their registration to a future training workshop that is scheduled to take place in person. If that subsequent workshop is also moved online due to COVID-19 restrictions, registrants will have the choice of either attending the online training or forfeiting the training fee.

Change or Cancellation of Training by Caroline Burrows

Caroline Burrows reserves the right to cancel or reschedule any training workshop for which sufficient registrations are not received up to 14 days prior to the workshop starting date.

If a workshop is cancelled by Caroline Burrows, existing registrants will be sent a full refund and may keep any pre-workshop materials sent. Registrations may be transferred to a future workshop if preferred. Caroline Burrows cannot reimburse any travel or accommodation expenses incurred (including in the event of COVID-19 restrictions) and recommends that all registrants purchase travel insurance.

EMDR Consultation

10 hours of consultation are a required part of any EMDRAA Accredited Basic EMDR Training. The 10 hours of consultation must be undertaken with an EMDRAA Accredited Consultant and can be individual sessions, small group sessions, or a mixture of both. Consultation takes place in a participant’s own time outside of the training workshops.

Participants may choose to engage in post-training consultation with Caroline Burrows or undertake consultation hours with another EMDRAA Accredited Consultant. A list of Consultants can be found on this page of the EMDR Association of Australia’s website.

EMDR consultation is different to clinical supervision. During consultation, participants receive individualised instruction and feedback in the application of the EMDR procedural steps, use of EMDR Therapy within a structured treatment plan, case conceptualisation, assessing client readiness, target selection, the specific application of skills, overcoming blocks, and the integration of EMDR Therapy into clinical practice.

EMDRAA Accredited Consultants shall not be construed as providing clinical supervision to participants. While clinical possibilities will be discussed in consultation and ideas shared in relation to the clinical situations presented, the therapist is solely responsible for the clinical management of the client/patient and is expected to exercise their best judgement in all relevant clinical matters. Participants are expected to engage in regular clinical supervision and ready access to therapeutic support if they need it.

Pre-Workshop Preparation

Participants are required to complete all pre-workshop materials prior to the commencement of the training workshop. It is also recommended that participants purchase the following textbook and complete the text as they progress through EMDR Basic Training:

Shapiro, F. (2018) Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy: Basic Principles, Protocols and Procedures, 3rd Edition.

Training Attendance

Participants must be present and actively engaged during all aspects of the training. Should a participant miss more than 30 minutes total of the training, to qualify for a certificate of completion they will be required to make up that time in consultation with an EMDRAA Accredited Consultant, at their own expense.

Participation in Supervised Practicums

The EMDR Association of Australia requires that all accredited EMDR training programs include a practicum component in which participants have a personal experience of EMDR Therapy, both in the role of therapist and client. This is to ensure that participants have ample opportunity to embed learning into practice before they commence using EMDR therapy in their clinical work. All practicum activities are closely supervised by Caroline Burrows and other facilitators who are Accredited EMDR Consultants.

In the supervised practicums, participants are required to work on real, personal issues to appreciate the subjective experience of EMDR therapy in the client role, and to provide a valid training experience for other participants in the therapist role. These practice experiences are for training purposes only and not for personal therapy. Participants are asked to select targets that are appropriate for a training setting, as it is not the environment to treat unresolved major traumas. Participants are provided with practicum preparation instructions in the pre-workshop material. The safety and wellbeing of all participants is of paramount importance.

Safety and Self-Care

The EMDR training experience is typically experienced as inspiring and fulfilling, however it can also be quite tiring and intense. Participants need to be aware that the reprocessing of targeted incidents during practicum sessions may lead to the emergence of other disturbing memories during and after the practicum. Due to the nature of training, it is vital that participants have skills to self soothe, regulate, and contain distress. This is necessary for everyone to have a safe and supportive learning environment. Self-care during and after training is strongly encouraged. Whilst all efforts will be made to ensure that participants receive ample support during supervised practicums, professional therapy assistance is not included in the training and will not be provided by Caroline Burrows or other Accredited EMDR Consultants. It is the responsibility of participants to seek, obtain and pay for appropriate professional assistance if required.

Participants with limiting or special medical conditions (for example, hearing or sight limitations or late-stage pregnancy) should consult their health professionals and discuss their situation with the training organisers prior to registering for a training workshop. Those who presently have or who have previously been diagnosed with a dissociative disorder, acute or chronic PTSD, substance use disorder, personality disorder, or an affective disorder should not participate in training without discussing their personal situation with the training organisers prior to registration.

Participants are expected to maintain a spirit of cooperation and mutual support for all people involved in the training, to ensure a positive and safe learning environment for everyone. Caroline Burrows has the right to dismiss from the training without refund any participant who fails to maintain appropriate confidentiality, is disruptive to the learning of other participants, or is deemed unable to successfully complete the training for any reason. In these events, participants will be given one warning and then be subsequently dismissed from the training without refund if there is a recurrence in the concerning behaviour.

Confidentiality

To ensure confidentiality of personal and clinical information, audio/video recording by participants is not permitted in training workshops. It is expected that all participants maintain the highest ethical standards of confidentiality regarding all personal and clinical information shared by other participants in training workshops. When discussing clinical cases in workshops, practicums and consultation sessions, it is expected that participants will de-identify cases to protect client confidentiality.

Equal Opportunity

Caroline Burrows is committed to diversity and equity in all training workshops so that all people, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, (dis)ability, language, or religion, have equitable opportunities to achieve to their fullest and to be safe, valued, affirmed, and empowered.

Training workshops are held in venues that are disability accessible. Caroline Burrows provides reasonable accommodations for persons who are differently abled, upon request of the individual. Individuals who need special accommodations to participate in a training workshop are invited to contact the training organisers.

Grievance Procedure

Caroline Burrows seeks to ensure equitable treatment of every person and to make every attempt to resolve concerns in a fair manner. Should a training participant have any concerns about the training content or delivery, they are encouraged to discuss this with Caroline Burrows or another facilitator during the workshop. Every effort will be made to resolve the concerns during the workshop, to ensure that the participant has a safe and positive learning experience.

If Caroline Burrows or other facilitators are unable to resolve the issue during the workshop, the participant can submit their concerns in writing to contact@carolineburrows.com.au. The submission will be responded to within 7 business days. If the participant has persisting concerns, they can contact the EMDR Association of Australia. EMDRAA’s contact details are listed on their website: www.emdraa.org. Any ethical concerns can be directed to AHPRA (the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) and / or another relevant accreditation body.
